According to Commission Regulation (EC) No 2335/1999 of 3 November 1999, establishing marketing standards for peaches and nectarines.
The minimum size allowed in the "Extra" category shall be 17.5 cm (circumference) or 56 mm (diameter).
The size of peaches (clingstone peaches) and nectarines shall be determined by:
the circumference, or the maximum diameter of the equatorial section.
Peaches and nectarines shall be sized according to the following scale:

Size D (between 51 and less than 56 mm in diameter) is not allowed from July 1 to October 31. Size "D" is only authorized during the period from the beginning of the marketing season to June 30 to allow the marketing of early small-fruited varieties and, at the same time, to prevent the marketing of late "D" sized peaches and nectarines from July 1 onwards, as they are characterized by a larger size when ripe. This restriction is no longer applicable after the marketing period ends.
